Abuse and Biblical Counseling

Today’s episode of 15:14 promotes the strong, clear stance that the overwhelming majority of biblical counselors hold on the issue of abuse. This episode seeks to glorify God and point victims of abuse to His love and care for them. Dr. Solomon shares what biblical counseling is for and what it is against when dealing with abuse and grounds that position in the heart of God, found in His Word. Spring 2022 Biblical Counseling Conferences

In this episode of 15:14, we hear from participants at two different biblical counseling conferences that take place every spring. First, we hear from attendees at the Faith Biblical Counseling Training Conference in Lafayette, Indiana, a week-long training conference in mid-February each year. Then attendees of the Called to Counsel Conference of the Association of Biblical Counselors share their experiences from the conference. This event takes place every April in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Jim Berg (Rebroadcast)

Dr. Jim Berg serves as Professor of Biblical Counseling at BJU Seminary after serving as Dean of Students of Bob Jones University for 29 years. He has a DMin in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, is ACBC certified, and holds advanced certification (ABC3) with the Association of Biblical Counselors. Jim has authored numerous books, including Basics for Believers, Changed into His Image, Essential Virtues, When Trouble Comes, God is More Than Enough, and Quieting a Noisy Soul—a multi-media personal study program addressing guilt, anger, anxiety, and despair. The Heart of Gospel Ministry

Pat Quinn (Rebroadcast)

Pat Quinn serves as Director of Counseling at University Reformed Church near Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. In this episode of 15:14, he shares about his transition from being a longtime church member to starting and leading the counseling ministry. Getting to Know Garret Higbee

Garrett Higbee is a member of the Biblical Counseling Coalition Board of Directors. He is Pastor of Biblical Soul Care at Harvest Church in Indianapolis and the leader care specialist at the Great Commission Collective, a church planting movement with over 100 churches worldwide. He is President and founder of Twelve Stones Ministries in Brown County, Indiana. Garrett is a seasoned counselor, teacher, and trainer with over 30 years of experience. He was trained as a clinical psychologist specializing in marriage and family counseling but had a radical conversion in 1992, which led him to trust in Christ and His Word for all things related to life and counseling. In the last decade, Garrett has developed a highly effective church-based model of discipleship and soul care, engaging every believer based on Ephesians 4. He is dedicated to helping churches thrive both in healthy leadership and in developing an authentic culture of deep discipleship and soul care. Garrett is a founding board member of the Biblical Counseling Coalition. He is blessed to be married to Tammy, and they have three children, Rachel, Zach, and Sarah. Lucas Leite

Lucas Leite is a PhD student in biblical counseling at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife Bella are preparing to head back to their home country of Brazil to work in spreading the gospel through theological education in biblical counseling. They will work at the Seminário Biblico Palavra da Vida in São Paulo, the most populous state of Brazil with over 45 million inhabitants. Their focus is on training pastors, missionaries, and counselors to do the work of biblical soul care, equipping them to bring the reality of the good news of Christ to the whole of life. Getting to Know Sacha Mendes

Alexandre “Sacha” Mendes serves on the Board of Directors for the BCC. Sacha graduated from the University of Sao Paulo with a degree in Economics. He has received training in theology from Word of Life Bible Seminary (Brazil), a Master’s degree in Biblical Counseling from The Master’s University, a Master of Divinity from Faith Bible Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry in Expository Preaching from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Sacha currently serves as a senior pastor at Maranatha Baptist Church in Sao Jose dos Campos and is a leader of the Brazilian Association of Biblical Counselors. He and his wife, Ana, have three children, Pedro, Tito, and Marina. Sacha joins us to share about his life, testimony of faith, calling to ministry and biblical counseling, as well as lessons learned along the way.

Getting to Know Steve Viars

Dr. Steve Viars has served as a pastor and biblical counselor for over 30 years at Faith Church and Faith Biblical Counseling Ministries in Lafayette, IN. Steve serves as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Biblical Counseling Coalition. He also serves on the boards of Vision of Hope, a faith-based residential treatment center for at-risk girls, and the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors. Steve is a frequent speaker at conferences, colleges, and seminaries in the United States and abroad. He and his wife, Kris, have three children: Bethany, married to Rob, Karis, married to Austin, Andrew, and three grandchildren. Steve joins us for this episode of 15:14 to share about his upbringing, testimony of faith, journey to biblical counseling, and valuable lessons he’s learned from ministry.
